The world of 3D modeling

What is 3D modeling? Which softwares do you use? Why do you need to learn these softwares in the 3D industry? What are the different types of 3D modeling?

These are some of the frequently asked questions when it comes to 3D modeling, and I hope you get some clarity after reading this blog.

So, what exactly is 3D modeling?

The process of transforming any element in 3 dimensions in digital software by manipulating polygons, vertices, edges or faces is called 3D modeling. Any object you create in 3D modeling is known as a 3D model.

Which softwares can you use?

There are many softwares available for you to create 3D models - such as 3Ds Max (3D Studio Max), 3D Maya, and Blender. There are even specialised software like Zbrush, Modo, Substance Painter and many more which set the benchmark for 3D modeling.

Nowadays, using softwares like Artec Studio Software, with the help of smartphones, anyone can scan and create a 3D model of that object in an instant.

What are the different types of 3D modeling?

  • Organic modeling
Any human sculpt or animal sculpt comes under organic modeling. Any person/living being we see around us can be created with the help of organic 3D modeling.

  • Inorganic modeling
Inorganic modeling which is also known as hard-surface modeling are basically the non-living things which includes vehicles, gadgets, and many more.

  • Polygon modeling
Polygon modeling is created manually by polygon primitives, which are volume primitives. Being the easiest way to model, this is considered as one the most popular ways of modeling.

  • NURBS
NURBS which stands for Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines modeling, is commonly used in computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering.

  • Surface modeling
It is a method of showing or presenting solid objects. It is a technique for engineering freeform surfaces.

Some fun facts, history about the world of 3D

  • The first ever 3D model was a car made in 1984 on a HP 9000 computer.
  • The first company to sell 3D models was Viewpoint founded by John Wright in 1998.

The rise of 3D modeling into a trend

Today, a rise in the 3D industry is being witnessed because 3D modeling is used in various industries like film, animation and gaming, interior design and architecture. It has also made its appearance in the world of UI/UX, where brands are creating websites and applications with 3D elements.

India is one of the countries where the 3D modeling industry has started booming in the last 2-3 years and it's still on a rise. Being a newer industry, there is a lot of room for growth for 3D modellers to take this industry by storm & create wonderful, artistic 3D models.

Some companies have their in-house softwares for 3D modeling in order to stay ahead of the competition & steer themselves clear from copyright issues.

There are large online markets today for 3D models such as Turbosquid, 3D Bazar, CG Studio, CGTrader etc.

To conclude

3D modeling is a process through which you can create digital objects which can be later animated and used in movies, games and also for presentations, basically anything and everything. Maybe reading this blog answered your questions and inspired you to get into 3D modeling?
